During his stay at The Danish Art Workshops, Sam Derounian worked on his exhibition The Machine that Grew too Big and the Singing Gardener at Norske Hus, Sophienholm.

The exhibition comprises two installations – one indoor space within Norske Hus and one outdoor installation near the main house. The installation in Norske Hus depicts a group of children trapped within a piping system in an eerie factory – a captivity that drains their joy of living. The children break out of the system and return to the outdoors, where the figure seen outside presents a speculative vision of our future, in which humans, nature and technology coexist in a captivating alternative composition.
Working Process
I was fabricating two life-size sculptures of figures. The figures were cast in wax using life-casting processes with both alginate and skin-safe silicone for different elements.
In the exhibition, a pipe runs throughout the exhibition space and penetrates the figure indoors. During the residency I was also problem-solving and planning how to do this.
