Hilda Hellström has been working in the wood workshop using the cnc router and the saw for an exhibition at Berg Gallery, Stockholm.
June 2023
With the saw I’ve cut up fungus infected beech trees, found at Møns Klint in Denmark. The fungus creates images and patterns which are revealed in the cutting process. From the wood I’ve made three intarsias.
With the help of the cnc-router I’ve cut out shapes that were used as inlays in a cast. Before arriving at the Danish Art Workshops I had cast blocks that resembled sedimented geological material. The blocks were sliced into sheets, and from these sheets the shapes for the inlays were cut in the cnc router. The process is not too dissimilar to that of the wood intarsias, where its inner life is revealed by the saw blade.
