Som led i det dansk-indiske kulturudvekslingsprogram har vi inviteret fem indiske tekstilmesterlærere til at afholde workshop på Statens Værksteder for Kunst.
I efteråret 2023 udbyder vi fem workshops – én for hver af følgende teknikker: Hand Block Print, Hand Appliqué, Bandhani Tie and Dye, Kantha Stitch Embroidery, Ikat Weaving.
Workshops
Hand Block Print
5.000 years old printing technique (Jaipur, Gujarat)

Indhold: Kursisterne vil lære de basale elementer af block print teknik herunder også om konstruktion og brug af redskaber. Kursisterne opfordres til at medbringe eget (enkelt) design, som forlæg til tryk. Der arbejdes med at lave trykkeblokke i forskellige teknikker.
Khushiram Pandey is a fifth generation block printing artisan and designer from Chipa Community Sanganer. Khushiram is the son of a National award winning Master Craftsman. He attended the Indian Institute of Craft and Design in Jaipur (IICD) from 2009 to 2012.and won the gold medal for Academic Excellence(2009-2012). He is the Creative Director of AK Group and works on his own brand “Awdhesh Kumar”, which deals in production and marketing of block printed textiles. He is passionate about the block printing industry and his main goal is to sustain the ancient craft while at the same time giving new direction and innovation to the prints and designs.
Hand Appliqué

Gaurav Choudhary is a Master artisan in applique work, with 8 years of experience in training artisans in the Craft. He is passionate about his craft and believes in intricate and quality work, along with Fair Trade and connecting people to his craft. He has trained artisan groups under Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH-Jodhpur), Development Commissioner Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Jodhpur Mega cluster.
Bandhani Tie and Dye
Bandhani (or Bandhej) is a 6,000 year old tie-dye technique of India (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab)

Adil Mustak Khatri is a fourth generation artisan who revived his family tradition in Bandhani. After twelfth grade, he learned Bandhani, then took the design course at Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya (KRV) to learn more. Through his work and design, he pushes boundaries in Bandhani and Shibori. He started his label ‘Nilak’, which means green, under which he creates naturally dyed, eco-friendly products. He received the World Crafts Council seal of excellence. In 2020, Adil was juried into the highly competitive International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe.
Kantha Stitch Embroidery
One of the oldest forms of embroidery originating from India. (West Bengal)

Smt. Mahamaya Sikdar is a two-time National Award winner who feels Kantha is more about storytelling that she ‘lives and breathes’ every single day. Having worked with established Indian designers such as Anita Dongre, Raghavendra Rathore, Sabyasachi et al, Mahamaya ji’s needles find their way around the cloth, and she lets her work speak for itself. Her massive Nakshi kantha sarees on the Ramayana won her the National Award both the times.
Ikat Weaving

Radhe Shayam Meher is a third generation artisan who revived his family tradition in Ikat Weaving. He started learning this skill from his father when he was in 8th grade, and at the age of 15, he started doing his Ikat weaving work independently. He has enabled many artisans through trainings on Ikat technique, design Development etc.
