Simon Starling has been residing the metal workshop to produce masks for a show in Berlin based on a conversation with fellow artists and scientists.

March 2025

Project for a Retrospective will begin with a conversation. A group of my previous collaborators will be brought together to discuss ideas of time both in relation to my own art works and to their own diverse practices. These collaborators will include Rasmus Nielsen (Superflex), Rex Lawson (pianola player and historian), Sherry Philips (conservator), Sam Bauser (marine biologist), Mike Davies (architect and astronomer), Graham Eatough (theatre maker) who will ventriloquize the thoughts of the long-dead poet W.B. Yeats and Fulvio Ferrari (designer and design historian) who will ventriloquize the thoughts of dead polymath Carlo Mollino – all of whom have played a vital role in the development of key projects within my practice in the last 20 years.

In the first iteration of this ongoing project, to be realised at neugerriemschneider gallery, Berlin, I will present these key individuals as masked figures – something of a theatrical ‘time-team’ – alongside the publication of our conversation.
